I am pleased to extend this invitation to the upcoming events of 3rd World Irrigation Forum and 70th IEC Meeting of ICID, which will be held in Bali on 1 – 7 September 2019.
Nowadays, the world includes Indonesia, facing the challenges of water, food, and energy which are affecting water resources development and management. It is also affected by the climate changes and environment degradation. Irrigation as a part of water resources system faces this climate problems as well. Currently Indonesia has a total irrigation area of 7,1 million hectares which consist of surface irrigation and lowland irrigation system. This number is relatively small compared to the population in Indonesia of about 250 million people. This figure indicates that’s sustainability of irrigation become one important agenda to cope with.
Indonesia now starts to modernize the irrigation system as one of strategy to resolve those challenges. The modernization has an objective to improve irrigation water efficiency and level of service of the irrigation system. Modernization of service through upgrading existing infrastructure is a challenging technical and institutional problem.
New solutions are needed, based on new management options and widely available technologies. The pilot projects for modernization irrigation system are located all over Indonesia in irrigation area that supply by water from dams and direct run off river.
Through the upcoming events of the 3rd World Irrigation Forum and 70th IEC Meeting of ICID, I hope it could be a good forum for sharing knowledges and experience in irrigation system development and management in particular and water resources management in general and could bring advantages for all participants.
Furthermore, I wish this forum can formulate a new perspective and strategy for the future of irrigation system. We are looking forward to seeing you in the conference. Welcome to Bali in September 2019.
